Logan Center Bluesfest

Bluesfest Workshop: 1920's and 30's Blues Guitar Styles with Eric Noden

Saturday, October 14, 3-4pm
Logan Center for the Arts, Room 028
This workshop is meant for 18+

Deeply rooted in the music of 20’s & 30’s blues pioneers, Eric Noden’s percussive guitar work, timeless songwriting and well-traveled blues vocals have earned the respect of audiences, critics, and musicians worldwide. The Illinois Entertainer described Eric “As a spiritual heir to Chicago blues guitarists of the ’20s and ’30s like Tampa Red and Big Bill Broonzy. This multi-talented acoustic artist fills an important niche in the city’s mostly plugged-in blues scene.” Varying his approach from song to song, Noden draws from a deep well of American music that fuels his high energy performances. His style, favored by early bluesmen like Charley Patton, Reverend Gary Davis, and Blind Blake, is one that only a few contemporary bluesmen have mastered.

In this lecture demonstration, “1920's and 30's Chicago Blues Guitar styles,” Eric will demonstrate and discuss the guitar styles of Big Bill Broonzy, Papa Charlie Jackson and Kokomo Arnold. Learn how these blues guitarists brought their southern musical traditions to the city of Chicago. This workshop is meant for 18+.

The Logan Center Bluesfest, October 13-15, is an annual public celebration created to honor the South Side roots of the blues’ tradition with concerts, workshops, film, food, and conversation and will feature local and national musicians and artists in spaces throughout the Logan Center. The festival features a series of performances by musicians that reflect the diverse history of the blues tradition; a major archiving program to capture the stories of local and national blues artists; a photography exhibition; and workshops and educational programming to inspire the next generation of blues musicians and aficionados.
